<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The young lady in the above photo is barely 6 years old! She KNOWS no fear of playing the game of golf, because its exactly that to her, a GAME!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What happens to the rest of us! The above shot puts extreme fear into our hearts. We see the wide bunker and a narrow green. This little girl sees her pink ball (look closely in the photo) and knows it simply flies over the bunk to get to the green.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Focus on the reward, not the punishment. Put away your scuffed balls when navigating a pitch shot over the pond. Focus on what you want and NOT what you are trying avoid.<br /><br />Lets begin the with fundamentals. Below is your blueprint for success:<br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Pitching</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><u>Fundamentals/Set-Up</u></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Grip down on the handle for better feel and control (and vary distance control).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Ball position centered</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Shoulders parallel to target line</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">• Stance may be open</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><u>The Pitching Motion</u></span><br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Imagine an inverted triangle formed by your shoulders, arms and hands</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The “triangle” swings away in one piece at start of the backswing</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As the hands swing back and reach waist-high, they should begin to hinge</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The downswing consists of swinging the arms and the club swing out toward the </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">target.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Swing ends with weight on target-side foot & shaft vertical, pointing clubhead to the sky.</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Two important ingredients to successful and consistent pitch shots:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">1. Maintain width of swing (maintain radius of swing)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2. Keep arms, hands, and club in front of torso (as it turns) throughout the swing</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Distance control options</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Grip down on handle</span><br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Narrow stance</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Shorten length of swing</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Slow the speed of swing, but maintain consistent rhythm and timing</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On shortening the length of swing . . .</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Imagine if you were standing in front of a large clock where 12 o’clock is at your head and 6</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">o’clock at your feet, 9 o’clock to rear hip and 3 o’clock to target-side hip. Vary swing length (position of hands in the swing) to </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">control distance:</span><br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">10 o’clock to 2 o’clock</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">9 o’clock to 3 o’clock</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">8 o’clock to 4 o’clock</span></li>
</ul>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1s-yy-VoXjk/UTj1Cbf59SI/AAAAAAAAAQg/zczYBAPLqs0/s1600/Etiquette7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1s-yy-VoXjk/UTj1Cbf59SI/AAAAAAAAAQg/zczYBAPLqs0/s400/Etiquette7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Manners matter in life. </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Manners also matter in golf where it’s known as etiquette and the underlying <i><span style="font-size: small;">S</span>pirit of the <span style="font-size: small;">G</span>ame</i>. Search “etiquette & spirit of the game” on the websites of golf’s two governing bodies, the United States Golf Association and The Royal & Ancient and you will find the following:<br /><br /><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #38761d;"><i>"Golf is played, for the most part, without the supervision of a referee or umpire. The game relies on the integrity of the individual to show consideration for other players, care for the course and to abide by the Rules. All players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship at all times, irrespective of how competitive they may be."</i></span></span><br /><br />A few weeks ago I took two of my students on the nine hole course where I teach. With few exceptions, I found very little of the game’s spirit there. What I found prevalent was a lack of manners.<br /><br />It was a warm Sunday afternoon, an unexpected opportunity for golfers to play a winter round. I was conducting a Training Session, a playing and practice session for some of my more skilled students. I had two teens in the session that day and they were anxious to get on the course like everyone else. I approached two young men on the first tee that were waiting their turn to tee off and asked if the boys & I could join them for a few holes. (My students would play a scramble format and I would be their forecaddie/coach.) I was appreciative when they agree to let us play with them. <br /><br />The foundation of my coaching philosophy includes quote from University of Miami Women’s Basketball Coach Katie Meir (a former UNCC hoops coach), “It’s not what you teach, it’s what you emphasize.” All of the children I teach & coach learn the etiquette of golf & proper pace of play, and are <span style="font-size: small;">equipped to </span>demonstrate it when they play. <br /><br />Here is a sampling of the poor behavior I noticed that day on the course: On the very first green I noticed two golf cars passing us, heading toward the second hole. Once we holed out, I rode up to these folks to see if they were meeting other players or what. They told me there were six people waiting to tee off on the first hole, so they decided to just jump head to an open spot on the course. Then as our group was waiting for that group to clear the green on the second hole, an older couple approached me in a golf car asking if I picked up their golf ball. Obviously they hit into us and thought nothing of it. I wasn’t even aware of the incoming <i>missile </i>and had simply thought I found a <span style="font-size: small;">another </span>ball we had in play. I handed over the ball and they drove of<span style="font-size: small;">f, passing </span>us too, with no further comment. Yes, we then had to wait on them as well.<br /><br />Where in the world was the <i>Spirit of the Game</i> that day? By my observation there was lack of basic manners, etiquette, courtesy, consideration, safety, respect, and honor. It did not go unnoticed by boys; they knew too.<br /><br />Despite the loathsome behavior, we enjoy our time on the course and meeting new golfers. I was grateful for the opportunity to help the boys become more comfortable playing with individuals they did not know. (I think the men, beginners to the game, enjoyed getting a few golf tips too.)<br /><br />I was pretty disappointed in what I observed on the course that day. When I shared the story with a few others, they made comments such as “That’s just the way it is.”, or “That’s what you get with public golf.” <br /><br />I don’t accept those attitudes. As a teenager I learned to play golf on public golf courses, because my family didn’t belong to a country club. I learned proper etiquette and was mentored by the golfers with whom I played and from my first teacher. I remember being taught that <i>MANNERS MATTER</i>.<br /><br />What’s next?<br /><br />When I voice a critique or vent a frustration, I also attempt to offer a solution . . . so here goes:<br /><br />As a golf professional (within my industry) I now have at my disposal more programs than ever before designed to increase golf participation. It is important to teach the golf swing, but it is also <b><u>equally important</u></b> to teach proper comportment on the course. That’s my responsibility; being mindful is crucial.<br /><br />I also call on all golfers to take the time to mentor others who take up the game. I know many who already do so and I ask others to consider the same when a new golfer joins your club association.<br /><br />Beginning April I will begin offering a monthly putting and etiquette clinic</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> at Tega Cay Golf Club</span></span> to new golfers at no charge. People “don’t know what they don’t know”, so hopefully I can pass on <i>Golf’s Spirit</i> in addition to swing education. <span style="font-size: small;">And, I will also use social med<span style="font-size: small;">ia avenues to educate<span style="font-size: small;"> </span>as well.</span></span></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Let’s pay it forward . . . for the good of the game.</span></span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Finishing up with you holiday shopping? If you are like me, you leave a little things until last . . . such as the stocking stuffers Here are some good ideas for the other golfers on your list . . . </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>1. Game improvement software</b> - Egolfplan http://www.egolfplan.com/</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">My preferred software. Receive complimentary coaching for golfers who are on my instructional packages. Ten day free trial available.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>2. Golf balls. </b> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">There are many quality golf balls on the market that make it unnecessary to purchase over-priced balls brand such as Nike, Titleist ProV1, or Callaway, etc..</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Before you get caught up in the marketing for low spin, keep in mind that spin creates lift to fly the ball higher, thus longer. Unless you have a wicked hook or fight a pull slice, stay away from low spin balls. Below are my top choices for reasonably priced balls:</span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br />Bridgestone - E5, $27<br />Maxfli - Noodle, & U/3, $25<br />Callaway - HX Diablo, $20<br />Srixon Q-Star, $25<br />Titleist - Velocity, $27</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">In addition, the </span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">following balls benefit </span>children and adults who have </span><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">lower clubhead speeds. </span>These balls are geared toward creating higher ball flight for greater carry. More spin & lower compression. Good qualities for increasing distance. My top three picks are:<br />Bridgestone - FIIXX, $20<br />Maxfli - U/2, $20<br />Srixon - Soft Feel, $20<br /><br /></span><br />
<br />

A Decision-Making Process<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">This time of year short shots around the green can be treacherous. If you don't have a plan, its easy to take a shot a few feet off the green, and turn it into a double or triple bogey. </span></span><br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Below is a decision-making process for <span style="font-size: small;">successful</span> <span style="font-size: small;">chipping and pitching</span><i><b> </b></i>around the green:</span></span><br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> Evaluate</span></span></li>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Lie of the ball – </span></span></li>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Slope</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Grass type - mowed or rough “hardpan”, etc.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Ball sitting up, buried or on an uneven surface</span></span></li>
</ul>
</ul>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;"><ul>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Carry to roll ratio</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Slope of the green</span></span></li>
</ul>
</ul>

<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Landing Zone</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Trajectory</span></span></li>
</ul>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Use your imagination </span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Visualize your shot & target</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Decide & state your INTENTION</span></span></li>

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><b>Final</b><span style="font-size: small;"><b> thoughts</b><span style="font-size: small;">: Use caution when chipping off dormant Bermuda grass once it has matted down.<span style="font-size: small;"> It is very easy to <span style="font-size: small;">"ch<span style="font-size: small;">unk" or "bl<span style="font-size: small;">ade" the shot.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span> <span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> Con<span style="font-size: small;">sider <span style="font-size: small;">utilizing a low-lofted hybrid club, e.g. 3<span style="font-size: small;">- or 4-hy<span style="font-size: small;">brid. The mass<span style="font-size: small;"> and length of the club will <span style="font-size: small;">move the ball quite easily through bumpy lies<span style="font-size: small;">,</span> up <span style="font-size: small;">slope<span style="font-size: small;">s or to multiple</span> <span style="font-size: small;">plateau<span style="font-size: small;">ed </span>greens. e.g. Tega Cay GC, Pines #2</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span>, 3, 8 or 9.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Never tried using your hybrid? Its <span style="font-size: small;">simple</span>. Grip down on the handle and imagine using a putter with a long stick. (No wrist hinging.) You will notice the ball taking off the clubface briskly, but developing feel will come easily with a little practice.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">My first recommendation is to beware when you shop the "big box" stores whether you are purchasing golf equipment for children or adults. Retailers like Dick's and the new Academy Sports will offer box sets priced around $150-$200 (good if your number one priority is price) . In order to remain in the $200 price range, the manufacturers use Zinc and Die Cast Aluminums including HST and 6061 Aluminum instead of stainless steel. These materials are softer than steel resulting in bending at the hosel (neck of the clubhead) generally within 18-24 months, rendering it a flat lie angle. </span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> Its not typically visible to an untrained eye.</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> In layman's terms, ball flight i<span style="font-size: small;">n</span> direction and trajectory are seriously compromised. </span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>Here are two points of caution</b>: One, the box set may not list Zinc or Aluminum as materials. However, if you see the word ALLOY, this means materials other than stainless steel are present. Two, kids can swing just about anything at a golf ball and discover a strategy to get a ball airborne. However, in the long run, they will likely develop bad habits to do so. Later on this affects skill development.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">What I recommend:</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>Tour Edge</b>. Equipment available for kids through adult. Quality made with stainless steel club head and available in graphite shafts. Complete packages available with golf bag. See more at http://www.touredge.com/ Their higher end equipment is Exotics. (You may not have heard of them, because they don't have a big advertising budget. They have consistently received good reviews the past few years & have reasonable price points.)</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>Wilson</b>. My equipment guru tells me the equipment is good quality. Wilson has been in the golf market for a long time.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>U.S. Kids</b>. Good introductory clubs for your child, but beyond 8 years of age, I find clubs for older children too flexible.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>Cleveland</b>. Great equipment. If price is not an issue, the Tega Cay Golf Shop regularly carries a few sets for children.</span><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><b><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">My advisory staff:</span></b><br style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><b>John Mottolese</b> - Equipment Specialist. Here </span><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" >are <strong><em>My Top Ten Interesting Observations </em></strong>during Round One of the 2010 Masters<br /><br /></span> <ol><li><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><strong>Fitness Prevails</strong>: Phil looks stronger and has lost a few more lbs. Kenny Perry has slimmed down quite a bit too. Best “guns” – Camlio Villegas has some seriously ripped biceps. (Unfortunately it didn’t help keep his driver out of trouble!)<br /><br /> </span></li><li><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><strong>Poor Taste</strong> – Regardless of your opinion regarding Tiger Woods, this act was tasteless. An airplane flew over the golf course at the start of Tiger's round displaying a sign, “Tiger, did you mean bootyism?” Whoever paid for that message is also illiterate . . .<br /><br /> </span></li><li><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><strong>Dazzling</strong>. As beautiful as Augusta National is on TV, it doesn’t begin to capture the stunning beauty & glory of the golf course. You’ve got to experience it.<br /><br /> </span></li><li><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><strong>Challenge & Creativity</strong>. At Augusta National being off the edge of the green by a few feet can be just as treacherous as several yards. Ben Crenshaw demonstrated coolness under pressure, creativity, and touch by using his hybrid to chip off the edge of the 7th green. And yes, he made his par putt!<br /><br /> </span></li><li><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><strong>Unique Player Branding</strong> goes to the golf shirt of Camlio Villegas. In recent years a professional golfer’s clothing & equipment has begun to look like a mega billboard. Logos adorn the sleeves, breast, back, etc. However Camlio likes to wear the collars of his golf shirts up, so Master Card has their logo on the flip side. I noticed the only logo of the many he was sporting! (Yes, I enjoy following Camlio as he is one of my favorite players and made my list twice!!)<br /><br /> </span></li><li><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><strong>Best AARP Performance</strong> – Tom Watson. No fluke from last year’s British Open, this man can flat out play at 60 years young! He is getting better with age. First round score, a 5 under par 67. Go Tom!!<br /><br /> </span></li><li><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><strong>The “Jimmy Buffet” Laid Back Award</strong> goes to Fred Couples wearing ECCO Street Premiere shoes. </span><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" >(ESPN's Scott Van Pelt referred to the shoes as "skateboard" sneakers!) They were cool nonetheless and must have made a positive contribution to </span><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" >his round one leading score of 66. Magic shoes no more unfortunately . . . today, Fred posted a 75 for round two.<br /> <table summary="" width="156" align="" border="1" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" height="100"> <tbody> <tr> <td><img alt="" src="http://thebrandingengine.com/WAMUser/UserFiles/243/Image/FC.png" width="136" border="0" height="103" /></td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <br /> </span></li><li><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><strong>Adjusting to Adversity</strong>. They switch their golf swings to auto-pilot to deal with the pressure and perform at the very highest level. Most, if timed with a stopwatch, display darn near the same routine pace for each and every shot.<br /><br /> </span></li><li><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><strong>Meanest Tree, STILL!</strong> The Eisenhower Pine. The 34th President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower was an avid golfer and member of Augusta National Golf Club. The president hit the tree so many times he proposed it be cut down during a 1956 club meeting. According to Wikipedia, “Not wanting to offend the President, the club's chairman, Clifford Roberts, immediately adjourned the meeting rather than reject the request.”<br /><br /> Yesterday, when crossing the 17th fairway near the Eisenhower Pine I noticed the most menacing limbs still remain due to steel cables holding them in place. Now that’s flat out MEAN!!! “Drive” carefully.</span></li></ol>Cami Berherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16397921883465271199noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-814541198874429633.post-50534597218340231052009-12-18T07:51:00.006-05:002009-12-18T08:46:11.935-05:00The Tee Shot & Confidence<div><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51Kcg9igiNQ"><img style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; width: 125px; float: left; height: 94px;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416558705141843906" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_bLo_tnRd_e8/Syt7cbUHh8I/AAAAAAAAAD4/ZWUE5soK6vY/s320/youtube1.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div>Watch my new video series, GOLF & LEADERSHIP.</div><br /><br /><div>Webisode 1 - Tee Shot & Confidence<br /><br />Do you have a pre-shot routine? It continues to be absolutely amazing to me both physically and spiritually! I learn new moves weekly that challenge my strength and flexibility every session!<br /><br />As a golfer and a golf instructor, I have struggled with hip flexibility and strength. Yoga has helped me improve both and I am now beginning to properly articulate positions in my golf swing I once found very difficult to achieve. <br /><br />However, the changes have been accomplished by two new disciplines . . .<br /><br />I also want to share with you my experience with the Carolina Sports Clinic and Dr. Joshua Kollmann, MS, CSCS, NASM-PES. Dr. Kollmann is certified in Active Release & Graston in addition to being a chiropractic specialist. And, in August he spent a week in Greensboro, NC treating PGA Tour Professionals at the Wyndham Championship.</span> <span style="font-family: arial;">(As soon as I can get him to sit still for 15 minutes I'll get the full report on his experience and post it here.)</span><br /><br />In addition to his practice, Dr. Kollman is cyclist and runner, competing regularly in Ironman competitions.<br /><span style="font-family: arial;"><br />Wow, what a great compliment Dr. Kollman has been to my yoga practice. His various treatment techniques have kept my back pain-free for the first golf season in nearly 10 years! My range of motion has improved greatly and it has been much easier to be on a strengthening routine . . . I am loose and it feels great.<br /><br />Check out Dr. Kollmann's website at www.carolinasportschiropractic.com. <br />
<br />What keeps you from taking your best game to the golf course? Everyone wants consistency in their game, but it appears to be so elusive. I believe it begins with fear and only ends with confidence. What’s in between is commitment and trust.
<br />
<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Fear</span>
<br /></span></span></span><ul><li style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:85%;"><span><span>Are you clear about executing a shot or does your focus lie in playing “avoidance” golf?</span></span></span></li><li style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Golf is a game of misses. The only perfect shot is a hole-in-one, so accept that while you will not always execute perfect shots, the misses work too.</span></li><li><span style="font-family: arial;font-size:85%;" >Fear not.</span>
<br /></li></ul><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span>
<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Commitment</span>
<br /></span></span></span></span><ul><li><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span>Attaining each level of competency in the game requires the focus of time and energy. Commit yourself to whatever time you have available to take instruction, practice and play. Set goals accordingly. (S.M.A.R.T. goals are a great start: Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic & Timely)</span></span></span></span></li></ul><ul><li><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span>Commit yourself to the fundamentals: grip, posture, aim and alignment. </span></span></span></span></li></ul><ul><li><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span>Always have a target. Golf is a target game. Be specific. Evaluate and gain feedback.</span></span></span></span></li></ul><ul><li><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span>Commit to gaining proficiency on a particular shot for a specific period of time. e.g. short pitching, bunker play, fairway woods, mid-irons, etc.</span></span></span></span></li></ul><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span>
<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Trust</span>
<br /></span></span></span></span><ul><li><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span>Decide the type of shot you want to execute and trust it. (I had the opportunity to work with former LPGA Tour Player Donna White several years ago on my own game. She preached, “State your intention, then execute it.”) Indecision ruins many shots, especially short game shots.</span></span></span></span></li></ul><ul><li><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span>See it, feel it and rehearse it in the “mind’s eye” before you execute it.</span></span></span></span></li></ul><ul><li><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span>If your mind wanders as you begin to address the shot, begin again. (This takes more courage and discipline than you realize.) Develop and practice a pre-shot routine on the practice tee you can take to the golf course. For beginners – this helps combat first tee jitters.</span></span></span></span></li></ul><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span>
<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Confidence</span>
<br /></span></span></span></span><ul><li><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span>All of the above leads to confidence and greater success if you have a plan and a process. Failing to plan is planning to fail by default. </span></span></span></span></li></ul><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><span><span>

All that has changed now and here’s how:</span> <span style="font-family:arial;">I met <a href="http://www.empoweryoga.biz/aboutus.html"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Aly Faber</span></a>, owner of <a href="http://www.empoweryoga.biz/"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Empower Yoga</span></a> at a networking event in April. We immediately bonded from an athletic perspective and following several conversations made a decision share our talents with one another. I am now practicing & learning yoga and Aly is doing the same with golf!</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">My Goals:</span> Increase my physical fitness level including strength & flexibility (especially strengthening my back), improve upon balance & power in my golf swing, and last but not least, deepen my mental concentration and spirituality. <span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br /></span></span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Session I:</span> My first session was like embarking on a new adventure. Aly provided me with a brief history of yoga and encouraged me to “experience” it and not “think”. If you know me at all, I tend to be quite pensive, so here was my first challenge. I LIKE challenges! </span><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bLo_tnRd_e8/SlzYt4u7viI/AAAAAAAAADw/1gCMbHAJDyM/s1600-h/j0433160.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 57px; height: 57px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_bLo_tnRd_e8/SlzYt4u7viI/AAAAAAAAADw/1gCMbHAJDyM/s320/j0433160.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5358395939498999330" border="0" /></a><br /></div><span style="font-family:arial;">Aly started me with a guided meditation focusing on breath and rich, descriptive images. As I began the movements, some were graceful and with ease, while others were strenuous, challenging my flexibility. The hour passed quickly. I finished a little fatigued but spiritually refreshed!</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;">==============<br /></div> <span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"><br />Session II:</span> As we began with the meditation I noticed it was easier for my mind to remain present. No thinking. Got it!!</span> <span style="font-family:arial;">Today I learned a number of new movements & poses. My favorites: Warrior I & II. Very cool! Aly is a very perceptive instructor, challenging my strength & flexibility, but making sure I achieved measured success and confidence through the session.</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br />In today’s session it became apparent to me that I have found something in yoga that I’ve always searched for physically & spiritually, but had no idea where to look. In fact, I believe other than finding the love of my life, yoga may be the most <span style="font-weight: bold;">profound discovery</span> I’ve ever made! Am I being too dramatic? Oh, perhaps; but remember, I’m <span style="font-style: italic;">pensive</span>. I’ve experienced the breath-taking solitude and beauty of playing a golf course at dawn & twilight as well as the Zen of fly fishing. I think yoga dares to exceed both!</span> <span style="font-family:arial;"><br /><br />I can’t wait until next week!</span><br /><br /><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><div id="refHTML"></div>Cami Berherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16397921883465271199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-814541198874429633.post-39378448942523187942009-02-17T21:48:00.002-05:002009-02-17T21:52:12.698-05:00<span style="font-family: arial;">Here's a follow-up for rookies on Twitter . . .</span><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Check out article on PC Magazine - <span style="font-weight: bold;">Top 10 Twitters Tips for Beginners</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Let me know how to "<span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(102, 0, 0);">follow</span>" you when you start tweeting!</span><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Find me at <a href="http://twitter.com/BusinessGolfPro">BusinessGolfPro</a></span>Cami Berherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16397921883465271199noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-814541198874429633.post-78550823469861645322009-02-13T20:31:00.011-05:002009-02-13T21:10:59.760-05:00<strong style="font-family: arial;">Staying connected and sharing interests & ideas . . .</strong><strong style="font-family: arial;"><br />Are You Using Twitter?</strong><br /><br /><p style="font-family: arial;" align="left"><strong><a href="https://twitter.com/BusinessGolfPro"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302463811794598066" style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left; width: 120px; height: 80px;" alt="" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_bLo_tnRd_e8/SZYivkBheLI/AAAAAAAAAC4/RAvDD_azng8/s320/twitter_button1red.jpg" border="0" /></a></strong></p><strong style="font-family: arial;"></strong><strong style="font-family: arial;"><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></strong><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">What in the world is </span><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;font-family:arial;" >Twitter</span><span style="font-family:arial;">?</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">That's exactly what I asked when I was first exposed to it while attending last year's Olympic Trials at the National Whitewater Center. Frankly, I enjoyed not having to fight the usual crowds!<br /><br />Below is a snippet of what I experienced and liked in new equipment:<br /><br />TITLEIST <a href="http://www.titleist.com/">www.titleist.com</a><br />All of my "test drives" were hit at the indoor range in the convention center so ball flight was limited.<br /><br />Fairway Woods<br />909F2 is a high launch with mid spin; I liked the their multi-relief sole design for shots from the rough. ( great players who struggle with getting fairway woods airborne)<br />909F3 is a mid launch with low spin with a small, deeper face for greater shot control<br />Both models were visually pleasing and easy to swing.<br />909H - I am very picky about hybrids, but I loved these and will probably have one or two in my bag this season. With a "modern chassis" this club soled nicely and got the ball airborne with ease.<br /><br />Irons<br />AP2 - if you like the feel of forged clubs & the forgiveness of perimeter weighting. These clubs had a great feel. I can't wait to see ball flight on Trackman or an outdoor setting. Performance clubs for ball flight workability.<br /><br />AP1 - with a thin top-line you are hardly aware you are swing a cast iron. Multi-materials: steel mixed with a tungsten nickel sole, elastomer bar and aluminum cavity. Great for gaining a higher trajectory.<br /><br />CALLAWAY www.callawaygolf.com<br />Woods & Hybrids - I absolutely loved the feel of the Big Bertha Diablo. Great feel & performance sole for achieve higher trajectory. <br /><br />Irons - in the past I've not been a big fan of Callaway . . . I've always had difficulty "feeling" shots.<br />XZ-22 - "higher level of feel for skilled players" paired with forgiveness and a "sleek" look.
